December is for Dreaming…

…and planning next year’s garden. I’ll be adding two apple trees to the landscape, a Fuji and a Pink Lady from Love Creek Orchards in Medina. I’m also thinking about planting a single grape vine (the variety as yet to be determined) in the space that I initially reserved for raspberries.

Kale, lettuce, spinach, carrots and a few other cold-hardy crops will be going in the ground early in the season, followed by tomatoes, beans, peas, okra and a host of other vegetables and herbs. The choices are endless, but space is finite, so like most gardeners I’m once again faced with pruning the list of what I’d like to plant to realistic proportions. The new seed catalog I got in the mail last week hasn’t helped a bit.

I’d especially like to find room to grow the Moon & Stars watermelon pictured on the cover, but melons take up a lot of growing space, and the dogs are already a little miffed at losing part of the backyard to the garden.
